The area of Greene County, Alabama has a rich and storied history. The county, which existed before the State, was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial Legislature on December 13, 1819, from lands ceded to the federal government by the Choctaw in the 1816 Treaty of Fort St. Stephens. The county was named after Major-General Nathaniel Greene who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war. The county seat of Eutaw was named in honor of the Battle of Eutaw Springs, the last engagement of the American Revolutionary War that took place in South Carolina. Among the earliest settlers in the county were patriots who fought in the Revolutionary War. During the Mexican-American War, the county contributed a company of volunteers known as the Eutaw Rangers. The company mustered in June of 1846 and participated in the Battle of Vera Cruz. Following secession in 1861, Alabama joined the Confederate States of America. Protected by three rivers - the Sipsey to the north, the Tombigbee to the west, and the Black Warrior to the east, Greene County came through the war relatively unscathed, with only one skirmish near its northern border close to Pleasant Ridge. Many citizens of Greene County joined the approximately 120,000 Alabama soldiers who served in the Confederate army. Alabama soldiers fought in hundreds of Civil War battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg where 1,750 died and many more were captured or wounded. Residents from Greene County have served in every major conflict, including the Spanish-American, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Guld War, and Afghanistan.
The lists that follow identify names of Greene County individuals associated with each military conflict. Linked evidentiary documents and their sources to support summary statements are included.
